PRESIDENT REAGAN WILL HONOR GEORGE WAGER
AT THE PRESIDENT'S VOLUNTEER ACTION AWARDS
The White House has announced the winners of the 1987 President's Volunteer Action Awards. Among the winners is George Wager of Anaheim, California. President Reagan will present the awards for outstanding volunteer achievements at a White House luncheon on Tuesday, June 30, 1987, to individuals, volunteer groups, labor unions and corporations.
George Wager is responsible for developing and distributing a wear-resistant identification tag which provides emergency contact information for children in case of medical emergency. If a child is injured and cannot be identified, some medical treatment may be delayed until parental permission is obtained. The tag has room for name, address, telephone numbers, medical information and a consent form all on a paper the size of a postage stamp, which can be sewn into clothing or slipped onto a shoelace. To fill orders resulting from an ad placed in a sheriff's magazine, Mr. Wager placed a second mortgage on his home. He has since acquired the help of several corporate sponsors and distributed over 40 million tags. To help pay for tags, he developed a child safety game covering 25 areas including safety with bikes, fire, strangers, drugs and poison.
The award recipients were chosen from over 2,000 nominations submitted in 10 categories.
